This elevated jasmine rice is a simple, elegant side dish that feels restaurant-worthy with minimal effort. Lightly toasted rice, rich stock, and a buttery finish create fluffy, flavorful rice that pairs beautifully with everything from weeknight dinners to entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 1ยฝ cups jasmine rice, rinsed
  • 2ยผ cups liquid (chicken stock, or a mix of stock and coconut milk)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil (plus more to finish)
  • 1 garlic clove, smashed or ยฝ shallot (optional)
  • 1 strip lemon or lime zest (optional)
  • Flaky salt, to taste
  • Fresh chives or parsley, finely chopped (optional)

Instructions

Step 1 โ€“ Toast the rice

Heat the butter or olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.

Add the rinsed jasmine rice and toast for 1โ€“2 minutes, stirring, until lightly fragrant.


Step 2 โ€“ Add liquid

Add the liquid, garlic or shallot (if using), and citrus zest (if using). Bring to a gentle boil.


Step 3 โ€“ Simmer

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12โ€“15 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.


Step 4 โ€“ Rest

Remove from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes.


Step 5 โ€“ Finish & serve

Remove the garlic/shallot and citrus zest. Fluff the rice with a fork.

Finish with a small pat of butter, flaky salt, and herbs if desired. Serve warm.
