This elevated jasmine rice is a simple, elegant side dish that feels restaurant-worthy with minimal effort. Lightly toasted rice, rich stock, and a buttery finish create fluffy, flavorful rice that pairs beautifully with everything from weeknight dinners to entertaining.

Ingredients
  

  • 1Β½ cups jasmine rice rinsed
  • 2ΒΌ cups liquid chicken stock, or a mix of stock and coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil plus more to finish
  • 1 garlic clove smashed or Β½ shallot (optional)
  • 1 strip lemon or lime zest optional
  • Flaky salt to taste
  • Fresh chives or parsley finely chopped (optional)

Method
 

  1. Step 1 – Toast the rice
  2. Heat the butter or olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add the rinsed jasmine rice and toast for 1–2 minutes, stirring, until lightly fragrant.
  4. Step 2 – Add liquid
  5. Add the liquid, garlic or shallot (if using), and citrus zest (if using). Bring to a gentle boil.
  6. Step 3 – Simmer
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  8. Step 4 – Rest
  9. Remove from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes.
  10. Step 5 – Finish & serve
  11. Remove the garlic/shallot and citrus zest. Fluff the rice with a fork.
  12. Finish with a small pat of butter, flaky salt, and herbs if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Toasting the rice adds depth and a subtle nutty flavor.
  • Using stock instead of water makes a noticeable difference.
  • This rice reheats well and stays fluffy.
